About us

The Guernsey Scout Association is the largest co-educational youth organisation within the Bailiwick.  We currently have over 700 young people and 150 adults, who belong to the 10 groups in Guernsey and one in Alderney. Not all adults are leaders (youth workers), many also help support others by managing adults or dealing with the administration of Scouting

Every night of the week somewhere in the Bailiwick, one of our many Beavers (6-8 year olds), Cubs (8 – 10 ½ year olds), Scouts (10 ½  - 14 year olds, Explorer Scouts (14 – 18 year olds) and Network (18 – 25 year olds) meet in various locations with their leaders (18+).

The leaders are volunteers who give up their time on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly or periodic basis to provide fun and exciting activities for our young people. We support the idea of flexible volunteering, where we appreciate the time that people have in busy lives is limited and that a regular commitment is not always practical.

Our activities range from making things to rock climbing, visiting places of interest to helping others in the community, sailing and canoeing to fire lighting and cooking outdoors, camping to going overseas to take part in a World Scout Jamborees and seeing how other people live. We carry out conservation projects and look at the world in which we live. We hold events for 3 people to thousands.

We encourage our young people to test themselves to do new and exciting skills under the watchful eye of experienced and trained leaders.  We operate a badge system to reward and encourage our young people in their challenges and encourage personal development to their own limitations and beyond.  We operate an excellent training programme for our leaders and helpers to support them in providing a balanced and interesting programme. We teach our leaders and young people life skills that not only benefit them in Scouting, but in their work and school environments. All of our adult volunteers are CRB checked and are given Safeguarding training.

We own Rue Maingy Activity Centre and Campsite with Girl Guiding Guernsey, 17 acres of beautiful Guernsey countryside.  This includes a large activity centre with an indoor climbing wall, large sports hall, where many other activities such as archery, football, volleyball and other sports can take place.  Two large meeting rooms and industrial kitchen to cater for small, large and corporate events.  We own an old Guernsey Farmhouse, known as the Hostel, which sleeps 32 and is hired out to all.  We own a reservoir on the site, where canoeing, rafting and other activities can take place.  The site also has a large campfire circle, where we hold campfires and a safe area for lighting of fires for cooking outdoors.

We are looking forward to our centenary in 2011, and will be holding a number of Island events to celebrate that Scouting has been in the Bailiwick for 100 years.
